The Short Answer
There is no single rate for crane truck hire in Perth, and any operator who gives you one without asking about the job is guessing. The price comes from five things: how long the truck is on site, how hard the access is, how heavy the load is and how far the crane has to reach, how far we travel to get to you, and whether the job needs a crane at all. Understand those five and you can read any quote you are given, including ours.
What Actually Moves the Price
1. Time on Site
This is the biggest single factor and the one most people underestimate. The lift itself is often the quickest part. Setting up, getting the legs down on stable ground, rigging the load, positioning it and packing up is where the time goes. A straightforward container drop on a clear driveway is a short visit. The same container into a backyard, over a fence, with a gate to unbolt first, is a much longer one.
If you want the number down, the most effective thing you can do is have the site ready. Cars moved, gates open, the drop spot clear, and someone there who can make a decision.
2. Access
Access is the difference between a simple job and a careful one. A truck that can back straight in and set up on flat concrete is quick. A tight verge, a narrow gateway, a steep or soft driveway, parked cars either side, or a spot the crane has to reach past a carport all add time and care. None of that makes a job impossible. It just makes it a different job to price.
Perth's older suburbs are full of this: narrow streets, low power lines, big established trees. It is most of what we do, and it is exactly why we ask for a photo before quoting.
3. Weight and Reach Together
People tend to ask about weight alone, but weight and reach work as a pair. A crane's capacity drops as the boom extends. Our Palfinger PK 15500 lifts up to 6,200 kg close in, and reaches 8.0 metres. A light load at full reach can be a harder ask than a heavier one right beside the truck.
That is why "it only weighs 400 kilos" is not on its own enough to price a job. Where it has to land matters just as much. The full figures are on the load capacity page, read straight off the crane's own data plate.
4. Travel
Perth metro is a large area and regional work is a different proposition again. Travel time is part of the job and should be in the number you are quoted, not added later. When you are comparing operators, this is worth checking directly, because an attractive hourly rate can be undone by a travel charge or a minimum that only appears on the invoice.
5. Whether You Need a Crane at All
This is the one that can save you the most, and plenty of operators will not raise it. If your load has a clear run in at ground level, a tilt tray will usually do the job faster and for less than a crane truck. The crane earns its keep when something has to travel up and over an obstacle.
Cars, trailers, site sheds, machinery on skids and containers going onto flat ground are often tilt tray work. Spas, pool shells, tanks going behind a house, steel onto a tight block and anything landing over a fence need the crane. If you are not sure, describe the job and let the operator tell you. We would rather send the cheaper truck and keep the customer.
What a Good Quote Looks Like
A quote worth trusting tells you what is included. Specifically:
- Whether it is a job price or an hourly rate, and if hourly, the expected hours.
- Whether travel is included.
- What happens if the job runs longer than expected, and how you will be told.
- Whether there is a minimum charge.
- That the operator is insured, and can send the certificate of currency if your site needs it.
If a quote does not cover those, ask. The answers are quick to give and they are the difference between a price and a rough guess.
How to Get a Firm Price Quickly
Send these four things and most jobs can be priced properly without anyone visiting:
- A photo of the space, taken from where the truck would park. That single photo shows the run in, the fence height, anything overhead and where the load has to land.
- What is being lifted, and roughly what it weighs.
- The suburb, and the street if it is narrow.
- When you need it, and whether the date is fixed.
